Neville Tait

Neville Tait has over forty years experience in the construction industry and is a graduate of Cambridge University in science and engineering, a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a Chartered Arbitrator.

He set up his own practice, J N Tait Associates, at the end of 1994 and specialises in arbitration, adjudication, mediation, dispute boards and the management of construction disputes including other alternative dispute resolution procedures. He is also a regular tutor/examiner/interviewer for various professional institutions on courses relating to such topics.

Neville commenced his career with Costain Civil Engineering in 1966 where he worked on sewage works in London and the South Midlands and on a Major Incineration Plant in Edmonton, north London.

In 1973 he joined William Sindall Ltd. in Cambridge as a Civil Engineering Contracts Manager, working on many reinforced concrete and water retaining structures, sewerage and water treatment works and sewerage schemes, road improvement schemes and infrastructure works. He then developed an interest in the contractual aspects of Construction and in 1984 became Head of a Department concerned with the settlement of disputes arising from a wide range of Building and Civil Engineering Contracts and Sub-contracts. He was made a Director in 1984.

He has been appointed as Arbitrator on over 630 occasions since 1988 in construction and consumer disputes and is included in the Panels of Arbitrators of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the Royal Institution of British Architects and the Chartered Institute of Building.

He has been appointed as Adjudicator on 120 occasions since 1988 and is included in the Panels of Adjudicators of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the Royal Institution of British Architects, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, the Chartered Institute of Building, the Construction Industry Council and the Construction Confederation.

He has been appointed as a Dispute Board Member on five occasions since 2008 and is included in the lists of Dispute Board Members of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

He has also trained in various other ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution) techniques including Mediation and is included in the Institution of Civil Engineers’ list of Mediators & Conciliators, the Chartered Institute of Building’s list of Mediators, the Construction Conciliation Group’s list of Conciliators and RESOLEX’s list of Construction Mediators. He has acted as Mediator/Conciliator on fourteen occasions and as Independent Expert on five occasions.
